A Message from the President

    may  2016

Thank you for your participation with IMA Nashville Chapter for the last two years. It has been an amazing journey and I have certainly learned from the best. On June 1, we will have new leaders, and I hope you will choose to participate once again in networking and CPE events offered by our chapter.

It’s been a busy few months, with preparing for the upcoming conference, making sure information is current, preparing for events, and preparing for the new year. I will continue to serve on the board in the coming year as a Past-President Advisor and VP Communication, and would love to see you at an event soon.

As a Reminder –
  • There’s still a little time to register for the IMA Conference. Details are on our web site. This is open to members, non-members, students, instructors and others. If you are in need of CPE, the IMA Annual Conference is offering 31 CPE. The Annual Awards Dinner is on Tuesday Night in Las Vegas.
  • What can you do to become an active member of your chapter and/or IMA? Start by attending a chapter meeting. Look for volunteer opportunities to serve on committees or as an officer—give it a try. Membership can be rewarding in so many ways. It looks good on a resume’, it allows for great networking, leadership in the chapter can be a stepping stone for leadership in Regional IMA or Global IMA and also within your work place. One of the greatest benefits is the people that you meet. I’ve been a member for many years, and I have met many new friends through this organization
  • Students & CMA Candidates: study a little bit every day so that you can pass that exam and get the job you want. Take the sample tests from the IMA and study material web sites, and we will continue to explore options for a study group.  Certification does matter!
Thank you again for your participation in your organization. Thank you to the IMA Nashville Chapter leaders who dedicated so much time and effort into a successful year, to the wonderful people that have served on committees and to our members in Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky.

I have enjoyed being involved with our Chapter and wish our incoming officers and committees good luck in the coming year. Let’s help our Network grow!

    April 2016

As I approach the end of my term, I want to share a few thoughts about the progress of our Nashville Chapter. We have been able to maintain the high quality of seminars that we have become accustomed to and to reach towards new speakers and try new things. Attendance at the seminars has seen a steady increase and our membership has had a positive trend and has broken the ceiling of 400 members. Our professionalism has continued and the venue has aided in providing a convenient and professional environment as well as making participation from traveling speakers more easily attainable. The venue has been a constant that has allowed us flexibility not only in our seminars but our Board meetings as well; not to mention the excellence of a central location and parking availability. As they say, “Location, location, location.”

We are entering a most interesting time of the year with Awards season coming up at the IMA Annual Conference in June. The final numbers have already been sent in and we hope for a bumper crop of people receiving Awards. Chapter Awards are a way to get our members and board members recognized for their actions and contributions to helping our chapter grow. We had one member of the Nashville Chapter write an article last year that is also in the running for an award. Our Nashville Chapter newsletter, Music City Notes, has won 1st place for the last two years running and we hope that it will be three.  If you are interested or planning to attend the conference please let us know, we have several board members planning to attend and would love to tackle Vegas as a group.

Forward looking to next year, I look forward to participating on the Board as your Past President and VP of Communications. I will look to provide guidance and share my experiences with the incoming President. I also am looking forward to expanding our Committees and to formalize additional participation from new members so that we have all those interested and able to fully share in the experience of the Chapter. Look for news and advertisement of upcoming Chapter Committees next year that you can volunteer for.

What we can do is look to the future with clear confidence as our Chapter is healthy and getting stronger by the day. Thanks for all of your participation and support. Continue to check our website for further details on future events, news, postings and other resources. As in the past, our primary method of communication is through the website and e-mail. If you have changed jobs, moved, or have profile changes, please update your information by visiting the website.

Please continue to provide your support by attending meetings, answering surveys or volunteering your services. If you would like to volunteer, please don’t hesitate to contact me or any of other Officers or Members of the Board of Directors. This is YOUR Chapter and your ideas, comments and suggestions are welcomed.

If you haven’t already please make sure the register for the upcoming 8 HOUR SimpliXL Event.  You can register and pay online.  Seating is limited so please email us at imanashville@gmail.com or register online to secure your seat.

I would like to thank the Board for their guidance and most of all my fellow officers for their support this past year. I look forward to seeing you at upcoming events. Let’s help our Network grow!

    March 2016

There is an old proverb “No matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow”. And sure enough spring is here already. It seems like just a short time ago that we were celebrating the New Year but now April is just around the corner. And since we’re turning the corner your chapter leadership has been working toward the new year to begin June 1, 2016.

Our chapter continues to evolve, developing new curriculum, encouraging new ways to network and share information, and provide more value to you, the members of IMA.  Your leadership team has been working hard to find topics of interest for our chapter meetings. February saw a great presentation of the ways to detect deception in employees, companies and others and March will give a very  interesting explanation of Business Intelligence and Analytics. In April we have another exciting topic, Climbing Everest:  How to Lead teams to Achieve Great Things.

The other area of focus for us during this shift from winter to spring is the upcoming transition of chapter leadership. At our March meeting we will present a slate of candidates who hope to lead the chapter during the next year. The success of this chapter depends on the willingness of volunteers to step up and get involved. If you have ever thought about getting involved in chapter leadership, now is an excellent time. Everyone has something of value to contribute. The difference is in who is willing to share their skills, ideas, and expertise to help the chapter grow and improve. If this sounds like something you would like to do, please contact me or our incoming president, Andrew Usery, to find out about opportunities to volunteer.

Upcoming Events – Mark Your Calendar!

Þ Don’t Forget about 8 Hours SimpliXL APRIL 22—   The Nashville Chapter will be hosting another 8 hour EXCEL seminar in April.  This event will be held at the Second Harvest Conference Center. Check Page 7 of your March Newsletter and the website for more details.

I look forward to seeing each of you at upcoming monthly CPE meetings and our monthly board meeting lunches, the third Wednesday of each month.  And as always feel free to contact me with any questions or comments at any time.

Roses are Red, Violets are Blue, IMA Nashville has many opportunities for you!

In life, sometimes the experiences that matter the most are the briefest. They pass in the blink of an eye: a few days, a few hours, a few moments. They are the experiences that illuminate the landscape of our memory, shining brightly even years later. They are the moments in which we see, suddenly, something we had not seen; we understand something we had not understood; we forge a connection we had not expected.  Time can slip by you quickly and opportunities for your career can be missed.  But if you take the steps to bring your career to the forefront it can be a bright shining light that you look back and remember… it all started taking off and getting busy when I put my career first and participated in events and networking with IMA.

As this year begins don’t let your career fall thru the cracks and let it slip by you as well.  Staying current on topics, and networking are a perfect way to keep your career  and yourself energized, shining bright and getting noticed.  When you participate in events you show your career matters, you feel better and you begin to be more confident in yourself and your career.  You speak up more as you learn new things.  Come join us at any one of the following events to find out for yourself!

Þ Our February Lunch & Learn  — 1 Hour Specialized Knowledge—Fraud CPE will be February 24th ”Detecting Deception” with speaker Daniel Porter from the State of Tennessee Comptrollers office.

Þ During March we have TWO CPE offerings you will Love — 4 Hours of  Finance & Accounting CPE on Friday March 18th, See Page 8 of your February for full Topic details AND 1 hour Accounting CPE, “”Business Intelligence and Analytics” from CDI Talent & Technology Solutions on March 27th.
